What Is Hypothyroidism And What Causes The Disease?

By James Kupe

Hypothyroidism has become a very common problem, with millions of people around the world suffering with the disease every day. Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid stops creating the hormones your body needs to stimulate your metabolism effectively. Because of this, your body doesn't have the ability to keep all of the important processes it needs to stay healthy.

Millions of dollars have already been spent on researching Hypothyroidism, with spending still ongoing. Researchers have discovered that the disease is more prevalent in people over 50, but that's not to say that people below the age of 50 can't contract the disease. An increase in your body's cholesterol level is probably one of the biggest problems caused by Hypothyroidism, which as you know, can lead to heart disease and diabetes if not treated properly.

In the early stages, Hypothyroidism can have many symptoms including mental fatigue and a general feeling of weakness of your body. You might gain weight for no apparent reason, or you may have unexplained feelings of sadness or depression.

If you think you are suffering from Hypothyroidism, the first thing you should know is that it's quite a common disease these days, and it can occur for lots of different reasons. One very common cause is due to people having unhealthy and unhygienic eating habits (or not taking really good care with the food they prepare) leading to thyroid problems.

If you eat a lot of starchy or sugary foods, they can also cause a range of problems with your thyroid gland. Or if your home or work situation leaves you feeling uptight and stressed, that's another way your thyroid can start to play up. Similarly, there are autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Atrophic Thyroiditis that can cause all kinds of problems for your thyroid. Another cause of Hypothyroidism can be exposure to some types of radiation treatment because they can do damage to your thyroid gland.

Side effects from the use of medications such as Lithium and Interferon Alpha and some kinds of bacterial infections, or low or no iodine intake in your diet can be a cause. Viral or Autoimmune Thyroiditis can also cause Hypothyroidism, along with a number of Pituitary gland diseases.

Hypothyroidism can be treated in quite a few different ways. Many people are turning to natural remedies due to the potential side effects of some drugs. While natural treatments for Hypothyroidism don't work for everyone, they can be a good complement to the treatments recommended by your doctor or health professional.
