Eczema Natural Treatment Modalities That One May Consider

Eczema is a fairly common skin condition that is estimated to affect one in every five infants that are born in the United States. The good news is that in a majority of them, the condition resolves spontaneously before they reach their twelfth birthday. Allergens that may provoke the inflammatory response seen on the skin are widely distributed in the environment and in the foods that we consume. Apart from avoiding the responsible allergens, relief can also come from using several eczema natural treatment modalities available.

Since the condition is immune-mediated treatment should be targeted at the immune system. There is a huge concentration of immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract that is organized into what is known as gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Maintaining the integrity of this tissue helps keep most allergic reactions at bay or reduces the frequency of attacks in persons that are already affected.

Just as is the case with any body system, proper nutrition is needed for the immune system to function optimally. The aim should be to provide the body with useful nutrients and to avoid toxins and allergens that may worsen the condition. Put simply, increase your consumption of raw foods and cut down on caffeine, dairy, sugar, processed foods and gluten which are all likely to provoke the immune attack.

Vitamins C and E, on the other hand confer protection from free radicals and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Probiotics enrich the normal bacteria within the digestive tract (also known as normal flora) and suppress the disease-causing microorganisms. The administration of probiotic supplementation to pregnant women reduces the risk of eczema in their babies. A number of commercially available cultured foods are a rich source of probiotics. Digestive enzymes also help in maintaining a healthy gut. They break down food and eliminate toxins from the digested food.

Stress management is an important aspect in the management of eczema. Adequate sleep is a treatment in and of itself and should be treated with the importance it deserves. Young children below the age of 12 years need to sleep at least 10 hours every night. Adults should have a minimum of 6 hours of quality sleep. Regular meditation, breathing exercises and yoga are effective ways of ensuring that the body repairs and restores itself.

As you consider dealing with the primary underlying problem, you may benefit from a number of natural extracts. One of the most common is coconut oil. The benefits of coconut oil can be realized when it is included in food or when used as an ointment. Aloe vera and a flower known as calendula officinalis work in the same way as coconut oil.

Just as is the case with many immune-mediated conditions, the treatment of eczema presents major challenges. The common treatment given for the condition is corticosteroids but these have been shown to worsen the symptoms. Although they may take quite long to yield results, natural therapies are not only safe, but are also an effective method of managing the condition.
