Employment Opportunities For The Physically Handicapped

By Grace Daniels

Physically handicapped persons have to adjust their lives based on the disability that they have. In spite of this disability, they are in most cases as good as able-bodied persons when it comes to employment. Rather than discriminating them based on their disabilities, employers need to give them a chance to prove whether or not they can meet their expectations. There are many different types of jobs that a disabled person can consider.

The type of job that can be done is primarily depended on the type of disability that exists and its severity. A person that is blind, for example, has different abilities from a person that is deaf or one who has spinal injury. At the same time, blindness exists at varying degrees; some people are mildly blind while others are totally blind. The same applies for all the other forms of disabilities.

A number of organizations have committed themselves to helping the disabled secure employment. These organizations have created extensive networks with potential employers and can do placements of different persons based on their evaluation. Some of them are also employers and take the persons directly. At the same time, most organizations that fall in this category are also support groups. They help the affected persons deal with the day-to-day challenges associated with their conditions.

Disabled persons should approach their potential employers with full confidence just like the non-disabled as long as they are qualified for the job. They should carry with them evidence of their previous experiences, academic documents and letters of recommendations from their previous work stations. In so doing the employer becomes confident and is not distracted by the handicap.

One should not use the physical disability as a means of getting sympathy and special treatment. Although this may work in some places, the long term effects have a negative impact. The employer is likely to always look at you as person without full potential and they will treat you as if they are giving you some form of a favor. In the end your self- esteem will be lowered and you may go into depression.

Disability does not take away talent. If you cannot secure formal employment but are talented in one area or another, the best thing to do is to nurture this talent and to become the best at it. Many disabled persons are talented in areas such as art, singing and even acting. All that is required is recognition of these talents by persons living with them.

Sports are another alternative that may be considered. Many disabled persons are talented enough to beat even able-bodied competitors at major tournaments in various sports. The more common finding is where the disabled compete against each other. All these are opportunities that one may choose to explore. It is a possible means of making a living as well as promoting physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.

Maintaining a positive attitude as a physically handicapped person is very important. It is important to strive for excellence even in the presence of some limitations. Many people choose to be preoccupied with their disability rather than focussing on ways of improving their other aspects of health such as their mental, spiritual and emotional health. It is important that they have proper family support for them to do this.
