Discover The Potential Treatments For Tennis Elbow

By Roberta Levi Chase

Tendons are muscle tissue that join to a bone. The elbow has tendons on the exterior of the arm. Recurring motions similar to swinging a hammer, rotating a plumber's wrench, or playing tennis may bring about damage and swelling of the tendon. Or an injury or sudden forceful movement of the arm can also generate these tears. This causes soreness in the elbow and is called tennis elbow. The term derives from the fact that lots of tennis athletes acquire the state from swinging a racket. The medical term is lateral epicondylitis.

Tennis elbow is pain on the exterior of the elbow where the forearm muscle tendons are. The tenderness travels from the exterior of the elbow along the arm. The discomfort is usually more severe when grasping stuff, bending the wrist toward the bicep or rotating the palm of the hand upward. Taking hold of things and lifting becomes excruciating. You may have difficulty grasping a cup of coffee, shaking hands or turning a doorknob.

Tennis elbow is most often diagnosed by an examination of the elbow. Pressure is applied to the muscles in the elbow, and if this produces pain, you have the condition. X-rays cannot diagnose tennis elbow, but they may be useful in eliminating other possible sources of inflammation.

Initial treatment of tennis elbow consists of the putting ice on the injury. You want to wrap the ice in a towel so it does not touch bare skin. In addition, you want to apply ice for twenty minutes, and then take it off for ten. Ice works best when used immediately after an injury and for the next twenty four hours. You may find anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen helpful.

Treatments for tennis elbow include wearing braces and supports, cortisone injections, and physical therapy. Surgery is an option for those who don't respond to other treatments. The good news is that 90% of surgery patient's recovery full use of their arm.
