Risks Of Enlarged Heart Symptoms

By Theo Hardie

Cardiomegaly is another term for enlarged heart symptoms. Doctors use chest x-rays to detect this anomaly in patients. Doctors do other tests to determine the cause of the enlarged heart. Cardiomegaly can be temporarily present in pregnant women, or it can be present in men and women for more sinister reasons.

Medical conditions that cause enlarged hart including coronary artery disease, weakening of the muscle, abnormal rhythms or valve problems. Cardiomegaly may not always be prevented, but it can treated. Medication, procedures and surgery is available to treat the condition.

If you suspect that you have cardiomegaly, you should see a physician right away. Some symptoms of an enlarged heart include chest pain, swelling, arrhythmia, coughing or dizziness. Even if you don't have these symptoms, you could still have the condition.

If the organ has to pump harder than normal, it will damage the muscles inside. It may be idiopathic, which means that it weakens for unknown reasons.

Hypertension and cardiomyopathy are two other causes of cardiomegaly. Valves control the flow of blood through the cardiac muscle. When the valves become damaged due to connective tissue disorders, infections or rheumatic fever, cardiomegaly is present. Hemochromatosis (too much iron) is another reason for an enlarged heart to present itself. Even severe anemia can cause this to happen.

Cardiomegaly is not to be taken lightly as the condition can be due to serious medical conditions. As the blood is unable to flow smoothly, the heart becomes bigger. At this point, the muscle can fail. When the mitral and tricuspid valves are not working properly, a murmur can be heard. Doctors can detect a problem when they hear a murmur. If you become aware of any enlarged heart symptoms, you must get in contact with a physician immediately.
